Introduction of Helium Leak Detector:
Helium is an incredibly versatile element, and the fact that it is
inert (and therefore safe) makes it highly suited to many
applications. Helium molecules are some of the smallest known
molecules, making it possible for them to escape through the
smallest of holes – this makes it the perfect tracer gas for leak
testing. A helium leakage test is carried out using a helium leak
detector called a Mass Spectrometer Leak Detector (MSLD). Helium
leak tests are done on pipelines, storage tankages, and vessels
that carry chemicals, crude oil, petroleum products, or other
liquid items to identify minor breaches in these sealed industrial
containers. When leaks are found, corrective actions are taken. A
helium sniff test is another name for a helium leakage test.

Difference Between Vacuum Leak Testing and Pressure Decay Detection
In a pressure decay test, also known as a vacuum decay test, a
pressure vessel is filled with air until a target pressure is
reached. Then the loss (decay) of that pressure is measured over a
set period of time.
Applications of Helium Leak Detector:
Each industry and application has different needs. Helium leak
detectors are used in almost all applications for the leak testing
of pipes, valves, tanks, vacuum systems, refrigeration and air
conditioning systems, and research and development. They are
particularly useful for detecting small leaks that would be
difficult to locate using other methods. Helium is also non-toxic,
non-flammable, and does not react with other substances, making it
a safe and clean tracer gas for leak detection.
